The orchestra and the virgin Mary play a major role in the Easter procession in Cotacachi, Ecuador.
As you walk down the main street, 10 de Agosto, well-known as “Leather Street”, you are greeted by the local orchestra . . . . .
. . . . announcing the annual event – celebrating GOOD FRIDAY.
Vendors prepare for the event. Crowds of people are expected to attend.
Something for the children – balloons of all shapes and sizes.
Competition is keen!
Pamphlets are distributed.
Young and old gather. . . . . even the poor.
Business takes on all shapes and sizes – commodities – even Bubbles which float away – perhaps a good example of the emptiness of such an occasion.
Coco! Coco! Sweet coconut milk – ideal and refreshing in the warm sunshine.
Mobile food suppliers arrive on the scene. Business will boom today.
”Coco Products” are available . . . . .
Business carries on while across the street a temporary cross is being erected.
Children attract business – candy floss, balloons, windmills . . . . .
. . . . and great crowds begin to gather.
This is all in preparation for the grand procession that is to follow.
Come with me to Part 2, the continuation of “Easter in Ecuador”, and view the meaning of Easter through the eyes of Ecuadoreans in Cotacachi. Then decide for yourself, if in all of these celebrations, precious people were introduced to the living Lord Jesus Christ.
